Bangladesh have made a notable selection decision for their upcoming two-match Test series against India, which will be a key fixture in the ICC World Test Championship standings. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has named a 16-player squad that features the uncapped batter Jaker Ali Anik, while pacer Shoriful Islam is absent due to injury.
In a significant shake-up, Bangladesh have included 26-year-old Jaker Ali Anik, who has been drafted into the squad to replace Shoriful Islam. Shoriful, who is still recuperating from a groin injury sustained during the first Test against Pakistan, will miss out on the series against India. His absence opens the door for Anik, who has impressed with his performances for Bangladesh A, including a notable century against Pakistan A. Although Anik is yet to make his Test debut, he has considerable experience in limited-overs formats, having played 17 T20I matches for Bangladesh, including four appearances in the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The rest of the squad remains largely unchanged from the one that recently defeated Pakistan 2-0, underscoring the confidence in the core group that secured their series victory. The team will be led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, with familiar names such as Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim making up the bulk of the squad. The inclusion of Jaker Ali Anik reflects the team’s strategy to inject fresh talent into the squad as they prepare for the crucial series against India.
The two-Test series is set to commence in Chennai on 19 September and will conclude in Kanpur on 27 September. As Bangladesh look to build on their recent success, their performance in this series will be crucial in their quest to climb the World Test Championship standings, where they currently sit in fourth place behind the leading Indian team.
